This recipe is from my Great-Grandmother's (Thirza Lulu Ellen b. 28/09/1892) recipe book. Her daughter, my grandmother, (Lorna Estelle Bailey b. 28/04/1922) possibly typed it on the Shell Company's Imperial office typewriter during lunch breaks in the late 1930s/early 1940s. It is interesting to note the "yoke" (yolk) spelling error, as the family always prided themselves on their good English grammar! Another aspect worthy of mention is that none of the recipes in the recipe book included oven temperature or cooking time - I suppose she knew her oven so well that she didn't need to have it written down. In saying this, my mother does remember her often complaining about her electric oven burning her baking! I assume this recipe would have been a custard-type pudding baked in a bain-marie, with a merinque topping. Arrowroot was a well-used ingredient of this era; as we would use cornflour today as a thickener.
