I am researching the voyage that my mother [Catherine Lillian Johnson, 6] and her brother, [Jack ,8] made with their mother on the S S Rotorua in 1916. They went across the Atlantic and had to put in to Newport News due to German U boats. Then to Jamaica through the Panama Canal north up to Vancouver, South to Tahiti and Rarotonga then onto Auckland. She was 6 years old and could recall going through the Canal as her brother threw her beloved doll over board. The recuperating soldiers on board had a whip around and bought her another one. A small ?French one with a china head etc.?Where would that have been? She also spoke of the sick men lying around and that it was a very happy trip. Is there anything written about this voyage?
Also, why were there sevral emigrating families on this ? troopship or was it in fact just a routine voyage for the S.S.ROTORUA..
I would appreciate any information. Thank you.
