Topic Type: Topic

Adding items and topics to Kete Digital New Zealand.

Items in Kete Digital New Zealand can be a variety of different content types:

  • Images
  • Audio recordings
  • Video recordings
  • Documents
  • Web links
  • Discussion

Topics are used to link items together into subject clusters of related material. Topics can also be linked to other topics.

Add a new Item

1. Select the item type you want to add.

2. Fill out as the simple template.

3. Browse to the file you want to upload from your computer. Any common file format can be loaded.

4. Complete the optional fields if you can. Rich information will mean your content is more discoverable through search and content discovery tools powered by DigitalNZ.

5.  Click on the Create button.

Images

Images can be digital photographs, digital copies of photographs or digital photographs of objects or things.

For the purposes of DigitalNZ (which focuses on immediate access) any common file format can be used. Jpegs guarantee that a thumbnail image will appear when people find your content in a search.

It is best not to load up large files; 200-300dpi is fine for internet display. Remember that many people have slow broadband or dialup connections.

Documents

Documents can be images of newspapers, letters, research papers, Word files and so on. You can attach most common file types as documents. To increase ease of access, it is a good idea to load up compressed files. You can use a 'Publication' topic to relate individual pages of a document together.

The contents of the document will not be searchable by Kete unless you transcribe it into the description field.

Video

You need to save your video clip as a single file, not a folder with an audio and video file. .mpg; .avi; .wmv; .swf and macromedia director files are all able to be up loaded. Quicktime is a good format for access purposes.

Add a New Topic

Topics in Kete Digital New Zealand are used to gather together related items. An item may be linked to from one topic, many topics or none at all. They are a bit like Wikipedia encyclopedia articles.

You can add a new topic from the bottom of the search result or browse page. Choose a topic type first, then fill out the template provided.

Link to a Related Existing Topic

Once you have written your topic you can link it to existing topics and Items, forming webs of related material.

If you are unsure whether a topic is related or not click on the title to go to the topic detail page (opens in a separate window).

Changing the Content of Topics
